Commentaries on Few Poems

Commentaries on few poems

The Convergence of the Twain by doubting Thomas brassy-
Introduction: The sinking of the British luxury passenger ship, Titanic, on her maiden voyage, in April 1912, with heavy loss of life, spurred many poets and writers to formulate and write on that catastrophe. The tragedy was all the more agonizing as the ship was described as unsinkable at the term of its completion. The ship was not only large, powerful, and extremely high-minded but was also equipped with extensive safety measures to safety device against any unpleasant surprises. Hardy saw in the tragedy a representation of the working of the Immanent Will, the force that governs the universe, which, in his view, was the sum total of all the powers (seen as well as unseen) in action in the universe.

Commentary: The poem opens with a meditation on human vainglory, bodied in the grammatical construction of the extremely luxurious Titanic. The governing idea of the poem however, is the great irony represented in the fact that the ships destiny had been sealed by the Immanent Will since the time of its inception. The will had prepared for the ship a mate, a infant: a huge iceberg that would unite her in a tragic and resounding union. The poem is thus an expression of Hardys philosophy of crass casualty, senseless concurrency that governs mans life and the universe.

Pied Beauty by Gerard Manley Hopkins-

Commentary: The theme of the poem, that of beauty built on dissimilarity, is embodied in the title itself Pied Beauty and is expressed everywhere in the poem. The poet praises God for all the contrastive things in life, for the ever-changing things, and for the varied things. All creatures are marked by admixture and changeability; however, they are created by a single master who is one and who does not change. For this He deserves praise and glorification. The poem aims to intend Gods greatness and the sameness of dissimilar things repayable to their comings from a single source.
